North London pub rockers named after the squat where they lived, 101 Walterton Road, Maida Vale (and nothing to do with George Orwell’s Room 101, as sometimes claimed). Initially El Huaso and The 101 All Stars, then The 101 All Stars, then The 101ers, they released one single, Keys to Your Heart. After The Sex Pistols supported them at the Nashville Room on 3 April 1976, 101er Joe Strummer said: “Five seconds into their first song, I knew we were like yesterday’s paper. We were over.” Within weeks, Strummer had joined a new band that would “rival The Pistols” – The Clash.
